Why slimline aluminium?

Aluminium is the only sensible frame material for modern roof glazing — it's stiff enough to span a 3m opening without a centre bar, light enough that one or two roofers can land it onto an upstand without lifting gear, and the powder-coat finish stays consistent for decades in coastal and exposed locations. Slimline profiles (50–70mm visible above the glass) maximise the daylight-to-frame ratio, so a 2m × 1.5m rooflight delivers significantly more usable light than the same opening with a thicker uPVC or steel frame.

We supply made-to-measure aluminium rooflights and lanterns from established UK manufacturers chosen for joint tolerances, glazing reliability and powder-coat durability — the things that determine whether a rooflight still looks good and stays watertight 10 years after install.

Frequently Asked

What is a slimline aluminium rooflight?

A modern roof window with an aluminium frame as narrow as 50–70mm visible above the glass — significantly slimmer than older roof glazing. Two main formats: flat rooflights (a single glass panel that sits flush in a flat or low-pitched roof) and roof lanterns (a multi-pitched glass dome that becomes an architectural feature). Both arrive factory-glazed in your exact size and ready for your roofer to install.

How much do they cost?

Flat rooflights typically £600 for a 1m × 1m up to £2,200 for a 2m × 3m unit, depending on size and glass spec. Roof lanterns typically £1,400 for a 1m × 1.5m up to £4,500 for a 2m × 3m four-sided lantern. Add bespoke colour, opening vents or solar-control glass for additional cost.

What sizes are available?

Flat rooflights: 600 × 600mm minimum up to roughly 3000 × 2500mm in a single unit. Roof lanterns: 1000 × 1500mm minimum up to 3000 × 4500mm in a single unit. Larger spans are possible by combining multiple units side by side.

Flat or lantern — which one?

Flat for modern single-storey extensions where you want maximum daylight without an architectural feature. Lantern for traditional kitchen extensions, conservatories or period properties where the roof becomes a centerpiece. The comparison table above breaks down the differences side by side.

Can they be opened?

Yes — optional. Manual chain-operated, electric remote-controlled and rain-sensor automatic versions all available. Vented rooflights add ventilation for kitchens and bathrooms (Part F compliance) and help with summer overheating in single-storey extensions.

What glass do they use?

Standard: 28mm toughened double-glazed unit, 4mm toughened outer + 4mm toughened inner with 20mm argon-filled cavity, low-E soft-coat for thermal performance and a neutral solar-control coating. Optional: triple glazing, self-cleaning Pilkington Activ outer pane, blue or grey solar tints, blackout glass.

Do you install rooflights?

No — supply only. Slimline aluminium rooflights are designed for easy installation by a competent roofer or builder, with detailed installation guides included. We can recommend a London / Home Counties fitter on request. The trickiest part is making sure the upstand is correctly built and waterproofed before the rooflight goes on — that's a builder's responsibility, not ours.
